ITINERARY

Day 1 –  Arrive Hospete - Hampi

Hospete is the nearest rail head to access Hampi. We settle into our hotel and start for our drive towards the boulder strewn land, which used to be the seat of the Vijayanagar Empire. Today we visit the Hazara Rama temple, Vittala temple, underground Shiva temple, Elephant Stables, monolithic statues of Narasimha and Ganesha. Awaiting our wonder are the remains of the Palace and the geometrically designed Pushkarini. We visit the Virupaksha temple and wind up our day with sunset at Hemakuta hill which is dotted with so many tiny temples.

O/n Hospete.

Day 2 – Hampi

Today we explore Anegudi which is the other side of the Tungabhadra river. Anegundi is associated with the events in Ramayana. Anjandri hill is believed to be the birthplace of Hanuman. This rocky region used to be the early capital of the Raya kings, and use to have a hill fort. We visit the cave temple of Ganesha where the kings used to pray before going to war. Durga Temple and Lakshmi temple are other important sites to visit.

O/n Hospete.

Day 3 – Hampi - Badami

We do a sunrise visit of Hampi to take in a few more sites. Back in Hospete, we check out and proceed to explore the greatness of the Chalukya dynasty. The three tiny villages of Aihole, Pattadakkal and Badami are dotted with architectural marvels dating from the 6th century CE and hence are UNESCO world heritage sites. Aihole was the Chalukya capital and noted for the Aihole inscription that speaks of King Pulakesi II who followed Jainism.

The cluster of temple found in Pattadakkal were commission by the queens of Vikramaditya II to commemorate his victory over Harshavardhana.

O/n Badami.

Day 4 – Badami - Hubli

Along with the sun we rise up the cliff that has a group of cave temples carved into it. While the detailed sculptures decorating the caves narrate interesting stories, the view outside makes us want to spend many a reflective moment there. Badami is a group of 4 cave temples said to be built in the 6 – 8th centuries by sons of Chalukya King Pulakesin I. While the first three caves are dedicated to Hindu gods, Cave 4 is consecrated to Mahavira, the Jain Tirthankara.

The rural landscape of these ancient sites fades as we reach the industrial town of Hubli for our train/flight home. But our minds stay rooted in the legacy that our ancestors have left behind for us. To be inspired and to be people of good action.
